Multiple Web Stores

What to do, what to do.

When we first got started opening up e-commerce stores, we decided to use Yahoo Merchant Services as our platform (using Solid Cactus as well).  That’s what we used to open our first store, YCA Solar Lights (now offline, decision made).  Now don’t get me wrong, it worked.  But as time moved on we realized we could do much better:

  1. It took an extremely long time to upload products
  2. Changing things around was clunky and difficult
  3. It’s a fairly antiquated system
  4. SEO wasn’t extremely intuitive

So, we looked into other solutions and settled on Volusion.  Now we have our “newer” store up and running at YCA Solar Light Store.  I can tell you it is an incredible step up.  Volusion makes everything much, much easier.  It seems like the people who started Volusion used Yahoo to set up their stores, got extremely fed up, and set out to make a much better product that solved all of Yahoo’s problems.

Earlier today we made the decision to close the Yahoo store even though we were still converting.  Why?  Mostly because we felt we could better serve our customers that way.  With one central home, our customer service can be better and more focused.  Also, we didn’t want two URL’s competing SEO-wise.  Lastly, our google advertising was getting thrown off having two separate URL’s competing.  We knew we had to do this at some point, but made the decision today.  It hurt, but I think we made the right call.

Thoughts?  What would you guys have done in this position?

Thinking of Buying Solar Landscape Lights?

Here are some tips and things to think about when looking to purchase solar lights:

1 – Solar landscape lights can increase visibility and safety on pathways, in your garden, deck area, or yard as well as being highly cost efficient to help reduce electric bills.

2 – The batteries in solar lights recharge during the day. Their battery should have hold enough charge to power the bright LED lights all throughout the night… up to 12 hours.

3 – Depending on the model several solar lights can be charged from one single solar panel. Automatic on/off switching eliminates the need to setup timers. Weatherproof/waterproof lights make them basically “worry free.”

4 – One of the best features of solar landsape lighting is not just their visability but also their versatility and ease of use anywhere. No electrical wires and extension cords make placing them almost anywhere in the yard or on a deck a breeze.

5 – How versatile? Extremely!
Solar landscape lighting can be installed not only on the ground, but on walls and fences, decks or patios. Lights placed on a path or hanging aong a sidewalk.

6 – Place path lights or hanging lights along a sidewalk to illuminate a safe walking path or highlight a part of your garden with solar spot or flood lights.

7 – The choices now available for solar lighting is wide. The offerings feature stylish designs and finishes in black, silver, brown, copper, white, or even antique finishes all designed to enhance not only the look but lighting in your landscape… from the backyard, outdoor deck, frontyard or entrance to your front door.

8 – How much light does a solar light produce? The “lights” used in the design of solar lights are LED’s… the more LED’s a light has the more light and area it will illuminate.

Those are some good tips.

I think what’s really great about having solar lights in your yard is that not only are they practical, useful, and money saving, but they are something simple you can do that encourages others to do the same.

When I first lined my back yard with these lights, my friends were blown away with how much light an “environmentally friendly” product like this actually emitted!  What happened next?  You guessed it, they all went ahead and got the lights as well.

One small step at a time, my friends, we can change the way environmentally friendly products are absorbed into the mainstream.

Be well, and as always, let me know what you think of my site.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Shares her Top 5 Tips on Going Green

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elayne) was on Jay Leno recently and described her 5 tips for going green.

Here they are:

1. Buy Compact Flourescent Light (CFL) Bulbs! They last longer and draw less energy.

2. Turn your thermostat up two degrees or down two degrees depending on the season. Learn to open a window or put on a sweater instead!

3. Give up your plastic bags! Bring your own reusable bags when you go shopping, and if you forget and must choose between paper and plastic, choose paper.

4. Unplug all electronics, including chargers, when not in use. Even if you are not charging things, they are drawing energy!

5. Recycle your old cell phones for free! Go to www.ema-online.org, print out a FREE pre-paid postage label, drop your phone in an envelope, stick the label on, and mail it in!

And if I were to add my own, I’d suggest you buy solar lights for your back yard or patio!
