Is a truly fantastic website and service:

I've recently stumbled across this website and it's already had a pretty serious impact on our site and how we market ourselves.

When my brother's and I first entered this field, we had an "if you build it, they will come" mentality.  We figured, basically, that by putting up pictures of products, a little copy, and then using google adwords…we had a business.  It did not take too long to realize that was a flawed strategy.

A real eye opener was this, Powerful Value Propositions, by the people behind Marketing Experiments:

Do you think your value proposition is powerful? Would your prospects agree?

Most
of the time, when we ask companies about their value proposition, we
hear a description of their business model. But that’s not what most
customers care about.

Customers not only want to know “What’s in it for me?” but “Why buy from you?”

This
is an area that even seasoned marketers have trouble with, because
there is so much confusion about what makes a value proposition
effective – including how to find one in the first place.

Because
value propositions are so important to conversion, making a few small
but crucial changes can have a big impact across all of your marketing
efforts.

What started as the belief that our website would move products simply by being there has transformed into an understanding that we need to get across a few critical things:

  1. Tell the customer to stop, they have found their resource
  2. Show them why they need to buy this particular product
  3. Show them why they need to buy it from YOU
  4. Show them why they need to buy it NOW

It's easier said than done, of course, but would be significantly harder if it wasn't for this.  Read the whole thing.

Once you've read it, I'd love your feedback on it.
